Step by step SUMMARY Asylum seekers, refugees, those with alternative protection status, and migrants in general face difficulties integrating into Latvian society due to various circumstances such as language, different cultural and religious traditions, and negative views towards migrants on the part of the Latvian public. Through this project a system will be developed and tested to decrease discrimination in the labour market and substantially widen the opportunities for asylum seekers and other migrants to become involved and integrated into the social life of Latvian society. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Activities of the project that are carried out by IOM Riga office includes: - Research on attitudes towards refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants in general in Latvia and the problems faced by state institutions
and NGOs dealing with asylum seekers and migrants; - Development of guidelines for employees of governmental institutions, municipalities and NGOs about asylum issues.
- Public awareness raising activities about refugees,
asylum seekers and migrants in general; - Advice on strategies for training staff involved with asylum issues and migrants;
TARGET GROUPS Asylum seekers, refugees, migrants in general. OVERAL OBJECTIVE The overall objective of the project, as a whole, is to establish efficient system for the social and professional integration of asylum seekers and refugees (or those with alternative forms of protection). PROJECT PARTNERS The lead agency for this project is the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs. Project partners include IOM Riga, Caritas, the Municipality of Liepaja, and the Latvian Red Cross. DONOR The European Commission's Equal project (75 percent) with co-financing from the Latvian State Budget (25 percent).
