Open labor market for women SUMMARY This project aims to provide opportunities to women for re/integration into the labour market, limitating gender segregation in the workplace, promoting balance between family life and work, creating effective support services, and defusing social and national tensions that might be brought about through the sustained economic and social hardships faced by a large number of women. The project targets economically disadvantaged women from different regions of Latvia – unemployed, women with low income, trafficked women and potential victims of trafficking. The project also has a public awareness raising component to raise knowledge of the risks of trafficking among the public. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project promotes gender equality and will ultimately reduce indirect discrimination according to the recommendations of the UN commission to eradicate women discrimination. The project reduces obstacles for women to join labor market and opens up career possibilities for women and increase their competitiveness in the labor market. Women who do not speak Latvian are able to improve their language skills and obtain knowledge in order to be more successful in labour market. A model for the reintegration of women who have been victims of trafficking in human beings will reduce social and psychological trauma, provide former victims with the knowledge and skills to successfully join the labour market. The problems identified during the implementation of this project and the recommendations that will be developed will facilitate the improvement of the current legislation and the state policy in the area of gender equality. TARGET GROUP Economically disadvantaged women from different regions of Latvia, including unemployed women, women on low incomes, trafficked women, and potential victims of trafficking in human beings. OVERAL OBJECTIVE The main aim of the project is to facilitate an open labor market for women, especially those of economically active age with low income, or who are unemployed, including women belonging to ethnic minorities. PROJECT ACTIVITIES
IOM is involved to varying degrees in the following project activities:
- Research to identify potential groups at risk to be trafficked and factors that facilitate the involvement of women in trafficking in human beings;
- Production and dissemination of information materials about rehabilitation and reintegration possibilities for persons who have been trafficked;
- Training of representatives from state institutions and NGOs working with victims of trafficking;
- Organization of camps for unemployed women and women with low incomes to educate them about
the risks of human trafficking; - Organization of information fairs on legal employment opportunities.
