About IOM

The International Organization for Migration (IOM)

Humane and Orderly Migration to Benefit Migrants and Society.

IOM is an inter-governmental organization that works with migrants, governments, NGOs, and international organizations to address today's multifarious migration challenges.

IOM's work is conducted through projects that endeavor to touch on every aspect of the Organization's mandate and are the most tangible means of assisting migrants and governments.

With some 290 field locations in over 120 countries and 118 Member States, IOM's activities focus on the following areas of migration management:

  •   Migration and development
  •   Facilitating migration
  •   Regulating migration
  •   Managing the effects of forced migration

No country in the world remains unaffected by international migration flows. Every country is one of origin, transit, destination, or all of these simultaneously.

At the start of the 21st Century, one of every 35 persons is a migrant – this number is even higher in industrialized countries, where one of every ten persons has left their home country.

The security and stability of our international system depends in large part on how nations and organizations alike can work together to ensure the humane and effective management of migration issues.
